How Bua collects, uses, and protects personal information.

Last updated: 17 July 2026

Who we are

Bua ("we", "us") provides an AI-powered chatbot platform for South African businesses, available at buabot.co.za. This policy explains what personal information we process, why, and the choices you have. It applies to our website, the client portal, and the Bua chat widget installed on our clients' websites.

What we collect

  • Account information — name, email address, and website URL when you register.
  • Website content — pages we crawl from a client's website, on that client's instruction, so the chatbot can answer questions about it.
  • Conversation logs — messages exchanged with the chat widget, used to provide the service and to show clients their conversation history and analytics.
  • Lead details — where a visitor chooses to leave contact details through the widget, we store them for the client concerned.
  • Usage data — basic analytics about how our own website and portal are used.

How we use it

We use personal information to operate the service: answering visitor questions, showing clients their conversations and leads, billing, support, and improving the product. Chat messages are processed by our AI provider (Anthropic's Claude API) to generate answers. We do not sell personal information.

Storage and security

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and hosted with reputable cloud infrastructure providers. Some processing takes place outside South Africa; where it does, we take reasonable steps to ensure an adequate level of protection consistent with POPIA's requirements for transborder information flows.

Retention

We keep personal information for as long as the related account is active, or as needed to provide the service, comply with legal obligations, or resolve disputes. Clients can request deletion of their account and associated data at any time.

Your rights

Under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), you may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information, and you may object to processing. See our POPIA statement for how to exercise these rights.
